Activities for 4 year olds: 15 ideas they'll ask to do again

Treasure hunts, forts, simple experiments and make-believe. Fifteen screen-free activities for 4 year olds, with the words to get them started.

Four-year-olds are a delight. They invent games, ask a thousand questions and want rules (which they then change). They can plan a little, they love working with you, and their imagination is in full swing.

These 15 activities suit that stage. Most take 15 to 30 minutes and use things you already have.

What 4 year olds tend to enjoy

  • Make-believe with stories and characters
  • Building and "fixing" things
  • Hunts, mysteries and missions
  • Simple experiments and "why" questions
  • Silly humor, jokes and surprises
  • Playing with others, with some rules

Children develop at different speeds, so treat this as a guide, not a checklist.

Build and make

  1. Blanket fort. They plan it and you hold the clips.
  2. Cardboard marble run. Tape tubes to a wall or table and race a marble from top to bottom. Test one tube at a time.
  3. Paper plate masks. Paint and glue a mask, then put on a play.
  4. Junk robot. Boxes, bottle tops and tape make a robot with a name and a job.
  5. Leaf rubbings. A crayon, paper and a handful of leaves.

Move and play

  1. Floor is lava course. Let them design the route.
  2. Obstacle course. Under, over, around, through. Time everyone.
  3. Treasure hunt. Draw a map of the house or yard with an X and hide a small prize.
  4. Simon says, 4-year-old style. Take turns being Simon, and expect some creative commands.

Think and explore

  1. Sink or float. Fill a tub with water and test spoons, corks, coins and toys. Make a guess first.
  2. Color mixing. Put a few drops of food coloring in cups of water and mix them to make new colors.
  3. Bug safari. Look under logs and leaves. Count what you find and put everything back.
  4. Shadow tracing. Put a toy on paper in the sun and trace its shadow. Come back later and see how it moved.

Pretend and calm

  1. Pretend shop or restaurant. Make a menu, take orders and count out "money".
  2. Belly breathing. Rock a soft toy to sleep with slow breaths.

Tips for playing with a 4 year old

  • Give them a mission. "I wonder if we could make a marble go all the way down without touching it" beats "Do you want to play?"
  • Let them be the boss. Letting them be the architect, chef or engineer builds confidence.
  • Make guesses first. "What do you think will happen?" turns any activity into an experiment.
  • Expect rule changes. If the rules keep changing, they're co-designing the game.
  • Stay near water and small parts. Supervise any experiments with water, food coloring or small objects.

What to say

Quick! The floor just turned into hot lava. Can you get to the sofa without touching it?

If it stalls

Test one thing at a time, and treat every wobble as a clue, not a failure. If they lose interest, let them be the engineer and hand you the tape. If they're done, switch to something quiet.
