Belly breathing
Rock a soft toy to sleep with slow breaths.
You'll need
- A soft toy
How to play
- Lie on your backs with a soft toy on your tummies.
- Breathe in slowly through the nose and watch the toy rise.
- Breathe out slowly and let it sink.
- Do ten breaths, then whisper one good thing about today.
Try saying this
“Look, Teddy is sleepy. What does he need?”
Your part
Breathe beside them and keep quiet. Skip the instructions and softly say what you notice: ‘Teddy is going up and down’.
If it stalls
- If they wriggle, that is fine. Keep breathing slowly yourself and let them join when they are ready.
- Try just three breaths. A tiny calm moment still counts.
Short on time? Three slow breaths with the toy on your tummy.
Why it's good for them: Slow breathing helps a busy little body settle, and it is a skill they can use for life.
Not this one? Try feelings faces, worry monster, glitter calm-down jar.
