Walking water rainbow
Watch colour travel up paper towels to mix a new colour.
You'll need
- Six clear cups
- Water and food colouring
- Paper towels
How to play
- Line up six cups and fill every other one with coloured water.
- Fold paper towels in strips and put an end in each neighbour cup.
- Wait and watch the colour creep.
- Look at the new colours made in the empty cups.
Try saying this
“What do you think will happen to the empty cup?”
Your part
Sit and watch with them. Notice and say small changes, ‘That one has gone orange’. Let waiting be part of the fun.
If it stalls
- Check it again after dinner and spot what changed.
- Start with just two cups, red and yellow.
Short on time? Two cups, one strip, one wait.
Why it's good for them: Waiting and watching builds patience, and the new colours feel like magic.
Not this one? Try fizzy volcano, sink or float, magnet hunt.
