Hand shadow puppets
Use a torch and your hands to cast animals on the wall.
You'll need
- A torch or lamp
- A plain wall in a dim room
How to play
- Switch off the lights and aim the torch at a wall.
- Make a rabbit, a bird or a dog with your hands.
- Give it a voice and a tiny story.
- Let your child try their own shapes.
Try saying this
“Who is this? What is it going to say?”
Your part
Make a simple shape and give it a funny voice. Take their lead when they start inventing, and let your shadow reply.
If it stalls
- Make an easy shape, like a bunny, and let them copy.
- Leave the shapes and chase shadows across the wall.
Short on time? Make one animal and give it a voice.
Why it's good for them: Making animals with their hands builds finger control and an easy way into storytelling.
Not this one? Try when you were little, indoor picnic, cushion fort and story.
