Sink or float
Guess which household objects will float, then test them in water.
You'll need
- A bowl or bucket of water
- A towel
- Things to test: a spoon, a cork, a coin, a leaf, a toy
How to play
- Gather ten objects and put them in two piles: sink or float.
- Drop each one in and check the guess.
- Move any surprises to the other pile.
- Try making a sinker float, with a foil boat.
Try saying this
“What do you think this one will do?”
Your part
Make your own guess aloud and be happy to be wrong. Say what you see, ‘It went straight down’, and let them explain why.
If it stalls
- Drop one in without a guess and watch their face. Curiosity often follows.
- Keep it to three objects if there are too many.
Short on time? Test three things in a bowl.
Why it's good for them: Guessing, testing and being surprised is how scientists think, and it feels like a game.
Not this one? Try magnet hunt, colour mixing drops, ice rescue.
