Leaf rubbings
Collect leaves, then reveal their secret veins with a crayon.
You'll need
- Paper
- Crayons with the wrappers off
- A handful of leaves
How to play
- Go on a short leaf hunt and pick 5 different shapes.
- Slide a leaf under the paper, vein side up.
- Rub the side of a crayon across it until the pattern appears.
- Match each rubbing to its leaf.
Try saying this
“What have you found? Show me the one you like best.”
Your part
Follow their eyes. Crouch down, look at the leaf they are holding and say what you notice. If they say ‘big’, add ‘a big, crinkly leaf’.
If it stalls
- Watch what they do with the crayon before you suggest anything, then do the same thing next to them.
- If they lose interest, let them keep collecting. Hunting is half the fun.
Short on time? Find one leaf and make a single rubbing.
Why it's good for them: Looking closely and controlling a crayon builds the small hand muscles they will use for writing.
