Fruit kebabs
Thread fruit onto sticks in colourful patterns, then eat them.
You'll need
- Soft fruit like strawberries, melon, banana
- Blunt wooden skewers or lolly sticks
- A chopping board and a butter knife
How to play
- Wash the fruit. A grown-up cuts it into chunks and quarters any grapes.
- Choose a pattern: red, yellow, green, repeat.
- Thread pieces onto the stick.
- Eat them or serve them to someone.
Try saying this
“What pattern are you making? Show me the first three.”
Your part
Cut the fruit and then step back. Comment on their patterns, ‘Red, yellow, red, yellow’, and let them pick what goes where.
If it stalls
- Thread one piece of fruit yourself and wait to be asked for the next.
- Use pieces on a plate instead if the sticks are tricky.
Short on time? Thread three pieces of fruit.
Why it's good for them: Making food look good makes children keener to try it, and threading is fine motor practice.
Not this one? Try yoghurt lollies, little bread rolls, no-bake energy bites.
