Ice rescue
Free little toys frozen in ice using warm water and salt.
You'll need
- A tub of ice with small toys frozen inside
- Warm water in a jug
- Spoons and salt
- A tray
How to play
- Freeze toys in a container of water overnight.
- Tip the block into a tray.
- Pour warm water and sprinkle salt to melt it.
- Rescue the toys one by one.
Try saying this
“Who is trapped in there? How shall we get them out?”
Your part
Be the rescuer's assistant. Pour when asked, and notice changes aloud, ‘The ice is going soft here’.
If it stalls
- Let them watch the ice melt before giving ideas.
- Offer one tool at a time: first salt, then warm water.
Short on time? Free one frozen toy.
Why it's good for them: Watching ice melt faster with warm water or salt shows cause and effect in action.
Not this one? Try sink or float, colour mixing drops, oobleck goo.
