Dino dig
Hide toy dinosaurs in the garden and go on a dig.
You'll need
- Toy dinosaurs or animals
- A spoon or trowel
- A tray of soil or sand
How to play
- Bury the toys while your child covers their eyes.
- Dig them out with a spoon, brushing gently.
- Sort them into plant-eaters and meat-eaters.
- Swap and hide again.
Try saying this
“What do you think is buried down there?”
Your part
Let them be the expert. Dig beside them, say what you find (‘Ooh, something hard’) and wonder aloud, rather than telling them where to dig.
If it stalls
- Wait while they dig. Quiet digging is still playing.
- Use a baking tray of rice or flour indoors if the weather is bad.
Short on time? Bury one toy and dig it out.
Why it's good for them: Digging, brushing and sorting is great for fine motor control and curiosity.
Not this one? Try magnet hunt, colour mixing drops, sink or float.
