Salt dough animals
Mix the dough, shape animals, then paint them.
You'll need
- Flour, salt and water
- Paint
- A baking tray
How to play
- Mix 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 cup water.
- Shape animals and press in details with a fork.
- Bake low until hard (a grown-up job).
- Paint when cool.
Try saying this
“What does the dough feel like? What shall we make with it?”
Your part
Let them squish and shape without a plan. Describe what their hands are doing rather than asking what it will be.
If it stalls
- Squishing dough is the whole point. Let them squish before they shape.
- Make a plain ball and a snake. Everything else is built from those.
Short on time? Squish a lump of dough into one animal.
Why it's good for them: Squeezing and shaping dough strengthens little hands and invites endless imagination.
Not this one? Try wax resist rainbow, tissue suncatchers, paper plate masks.
