Paper plate masks
Paint and glue a mask, then wear it for a story.
You'll need
- Paper plates
- Paint or markers
- Glue and scraps
- String or a stick
How to play
- Cut eye holes (a grown-up job).
- Paint a face: an animal, a monster, anything.
- Glue on extras like feathers, fabric or paper.
- Wear the mask and act out a short story.
Try saying this
“Tell me about your mask. Who is it going to be?”
Your part
Let them decide who the mask is. Comment on what they are painting rather than asking what it is, and build on whatever they tell you.
If it stalls
- Make a plain mask beside them and say nothing. Children often copy, then take it somewhere new.
- No pressure to finish. Put the half-done mask on and let them start the story.
Short on time? Draw a face on a plate and make it say hello.
Why it's good for them: Pretending to be someone else is how children practise feelings, language and seeing other points of view.
Not this one? Try wax resist rainbow, tissue suncatchers, bubble wrap prints.
