Story stones
Draw pictures on stones and tell a story from them.
You'll need
- Smooth stones
- Markers
- A bag
How to play
- Draw a simple picture on each stone: a boat, a star, a dragon.
- Pull three from the bag.
- Make up a story using all three.
- Pass the bag and do it again.
Try saying this
“Pick a stone. What does it make you think of?”
Your part
Let them tell the story. Listen, repeat what they say with a little added (‘Yes, a tiny red boat’), and resist the urge to fix the plot.
If it stalls
- Start the story with just one sentence, then pass it straight back.
- Tie two stones together: 'What if the dragon met the boat?'
Short on time? Pull one stone and tell one sentence about it.
Why it's good for them: Making up stories builds language and the confidence to share their own ideas.
Not this one? Try cushion fort and story, hand shadow puppets, jigsaw together.
