Paper bridge challenge
Fold paper to hold up toy cars across a gap.
You'll need
- Sheets of paper
- Two stacks of books
- Toy cars or coins
How to play
- Set two stacks of books a hand-width apart.
- Lay a flat sheet across and test with a car.
- Fold, roll or pleat the paper to make it stronger.
- Count how many cars each design holds.
Try saying this
“How could we make the paper stronger? What shall we try?”
Your part
Try a design alongside them and wonder aloud why one holds more. Cheer their discoveries and let them test.
If it stalls
- Fold your sheet in a pleat and see if they copy.
- Make the gap smaller if nothing is working.
Short on time? One flat bridge and one folded bridge, which is stronger?
Why it's good for them: Discovering that folds add strength is hands-on physics, and children remember what they test.
Not this one? Try cardboard marble run, paper cup towers, twig fairy house.
