Sock puppet theatre
Make puppets from old socks and put on a show.
You'll need
- Old socks
- Buttons or paper eyes
- Glue or a needle and thread
- A sheet and two chairs
How to play
- Decorate a sock with eyes, hair and a mouth.
- Hang a sheet between two chairs for a stage.
- Plan a 3-line story together.
- Perform for the family.
Try saying this
“Your puppet looks like it has something to say. What is it?”
Your part
Let their puppet lead the show. Give yours a small part, and expand on what theirs says rather than steering the story.
If it stalls
- Let your puppet get nervous and ask theirs for help. Children love to rescue.
- Keep the show tiny: hello, a problem, a happy ending.
Short on time? Draw a face on a sock and have a two-line chat.
Why it's good for them: Speaking through a puppet helps shy children try out words and feelings with less pressure.
Not this one? Try pretend café, toy shop, post office.
