Worry monster
Make a monster that eats worries, so they can be posted away.
You'll need
- A tissue box or small box
- Paper, markers and glue
- Scraps for decoration
How to play
- Decorate the box into a hungry monster with a big mouth.
- Name the monster.
- Draw or whisper a worry and feed it to the monster.
- Empty the box together at bedtime and say goodnight.
Try saying this
“What does your monster look like? What does it like to eat?”
Your part
Let them decide what the monster looks like and what it eats. If they share a worry, listen without solving it.
If it stalls
- Offer to feed the monster a worry of your own to start.
- Skip the worries and use it as a ‘nice things’ box instead.
Short on time? Draw a face on a box and feed it one pretend worry.
Why it's good for them: Putting a worry outside themselves makes it smaller and easier to talk about.
Not this one? Try five senses check-in, feelings faces, bubble breathing.
