Torn-paper mosaic
Tear coloured paper into scraps and glue them into a picture.
You'll need
- Old magazines or coloured paper
- A glue stick
- A sheet of card
How to play
- Tear paper into small pieces and sort them by colour.
- Draw a simple outline on the card: a fish, a sun, a house.
- Glue pieces inside the outline, edge to edge.
- Stand back and admire the mosaic.
Try saying this
“Which colours shall we hunt for first?”
Your part
Sit alongside and tear your own scraps. Describe what they are choosing, ‘You found lots of blues’, and let them decide where every piece goes.
If it stalls
- Pass them scraps one at a time and wait. Often they take over from there.
- If the outline feels like too much, let them cover a whole page with scraps.
Short on time? Tear ten scraps and stick them in a rainbow row.
Why it's good for them: Tearing paper is surprisingly good hand-strengthening work, and sorting colours steadies attention.
Not this one? Try salt dough animals, tissue suncatchers, scribble monsters.
