Star map at dusk
Look up, then draw your own constellations.
You'll need
- Dark paper
- White crayon or chalk
- A torch with a red cover (optional)
How to play
- Go outside as it gets dark and find the brightest stars.
- Join dots in your own pattern.
- Name your constellation and tell its story.
- Draw it on dark paper.
Try saying this
“What can you see up there? Is anything moving?”
Your part
Look up with them and share what you see. Wonder out loud, and add to what they say rather than correcting it.
If it stalls
- Lie on a blanket and look quietly together. Looking up is calmer than standing.
- Cloudy? Draw a sky from memory and invent the stars.
Short on time? Find three stars and join them up.
Why it's good for them: Looking up together makes the world feel big and gives you a quiet window to talk.
Not this one? Try garden bug hunt, colour scavenger walk, shadow tracing.
