Colour mixing drops
Drop primary colours onto paper and watch them blend.
You'll need
- Red, yellow and blue food colouring in water
- Pipettes or spoons
- White paper plates or coffee filters
How to play
- Put a few drops of each colour on a plate.
- Tilt and swirl to see them mix.
- Predict what red and yellow will make.
- Dry the filters and hang them up.
Try saying this
“What colour will we make if we mix these two?”
Your part
Drip beside them and share the surprise. Say the colour you see, ‘It has turned green’, and let them lead the mixing.
If it stalls
- Start with just two colours.
- Use big spoons if pipettes are fiddly.
Short on time? Mix two colours on a plate.
Why it's good for them: Mixing colours is hands-on science that makes predicting fun.
