Paper weaving
Weave paper strips over and under to make a patterned mat.
You'll need
- Two colours of paper
- Scissors
- Tape
How to play
- Fold one sheet in half and cut slits from the fold, stopping before the edge.
- Cut strips from the other colour.
- Weave a strip over, under, over, under.
- Alternate the next strip, then tape the ends down.
Try saying this
“Can you find the way through? Which way does this one go?”
Your part
Weave a strip of your own, slowly, while they watch if they want to. Say what you see, ‘Over, then under’, and leave the pattern to them.
If it stalls
- Weave the first strip together, then hand over the second and wait.
- Use fat strips and big slits so little fingers can manage.
Short on time? Weave three strips and call it a mat.
Why it's good for them: Over-and-under patterns build sequencing, which sits behind early maths and reading.
Not this one? Try scribble monsters, tissue suncatchers, torn-paper mosaic.
