Feelings faces
Draw faces for different feelings and say when you have felt each.
You'll need
- Paper plates or paper
- Markers
- A mirror (optional)
How to play
- Draw a face on each plate: happy, sad, cross, nervous, silly.
- Pull faces in the mirror to match.
- Share one time you felt like each face.
- Keep the plates for later.
Try saying this
“Which face have you had on today?”
Your part
Name your own feelings plainly and listen to theirs without fixing. Reflect back what they say, ‘So you felt sad when it rained’.
If it stalls
- Share a small moment of your own first. Children copy honest feelings.
- Skip the talking and just make the faces.
Short on time? Draw one happy face and one grumpy face.
Why it's good for them: Naming feelings is the first step to handling them, and faces make it easy to start.
Not this one? Try bubble breathing, glitter calm-down jar, belly breathing.
