Shake-it butter
Shake cream in a jar until it turns into butter.
You'll need
- A jar with a tight lid
- Double cream, at room temperature
- A pinch of salt
- Bread or crackers
How to play
- Half fill the jar with cream and close the lid tightly.
- Take turns shaking. First it sloshes, then thickens.
- Keep going until you hear a lump bang about.
- Pour off the buttermilk, add salt and spread on bread.
Try saying this
“What do you think is happening in the jar?”
Your part
Take turns shaking and describe what you hear changing. Resist explaining, and let them guess what is going on inside.
If it stalls
- Count shakes together, a hundred at a time.
- Turn it into a song with a beat to keep going.
Short on time? Shake the jar for two minutes and see what happens.
Why it's good for them: Watching cream turn into butter is a real kitchen surprise that makes food feel less mysterious.
