Garden bug hunt
Look under logs and leaves, then draw what you find.
You'll need
- A magnifying glass (or just sharp eyes)
- Paper and pencil
- A clear pot
How to play
- Walk slowly and turn over a log or large stone.
- Count how many different creatures you find.
- Draw your favourite and give it a name.
- Put everything back as you found it.
Try saying this
“Who lives under here? Show me what you can find.”
Your part
Share what they are looking at. Get down low, watch where they point, and say what you can see: ‘It is climbing up the stalk’.
If it stalls
- Wait and watch where they look first, then look there too.
- No garden? A park, a pavement crack or a plant pot works just as well.
Short on time? Find one creature and give it a name.
Why it's good for them: Noticing small things closely builds focus, curiosity and a love of nature.
Not this one? Try pavement chalk town, nature bracelets, leaf rubbings.
