Little bread rolls
Knead dough, shape little rolls and smell them baking.
You'll need
- Bread flour
- Yeast, sugar, salt and warm water
- A baking tray
How to play
- A grown-up mixes the dough. Your child kneads it.
- Rest it under a cloth until it puffs up.
- Shape into snails, plaits or balls.
- A grown-up bakes. Wait for the smell, then eat warm.
Try saying this
“What shape shall we make our bread? You decide.”
Your part
Knead a lump of your own at the same speed. Wonder aloud about what is happening, and let them name their roll shapes.
If it stalls
- Give them a small ball of dough to push and pull while you do the rest.
- Do the waiting jobs, like checking the dough, together.
Short on time? Knead one ball and shape one roll.
Why it's good for them: Waiting for dough to rise teaches patience, and eating something they made feels huge.
