Water glass xylophone
Fill glasses to different levels and tap out a tune.
You'll need
- Six identical glasses or jars
- Water
- A spoon
- Food colouring (optional)
How to play
- Line up the glasses and fill each a little differently.
- Tap each with a spoon and listen.
- Order them from low to high.
- Play a simple tune.
Try saying this
“Which glass do you think sounds the highest?”
Your part
Tap gently and describe the sounds. Follow their experiments, and be quiet when they find something interesting.
If it stalls
- Tap two glasses and ask which is higher.
- Use plastic cups if glass is a worry.
Short on time? Tap three glasses with different levels.
Why it's good for them: Matching pitch to water levels links hearing, sight and maths.
Not this one? Try silly song swap, sound effect story, body beats.
