Scribble monsters
Draw a wild scribble, then turn it into a monster with a name.
You'll need
- Paper
- Pens or crayons
How to play
- Close your eyes and make a big scribble on the page.
- Open your eyes and look for a face or body hiding in it.
- Add eyes, teeth, feet and anything else it needs.
- Name your monster and say what it likes to eat.
Try saying this
“I see something in this scribble. What can you find in yours?”
Your part
Make your own scribble beside theirs. When they name a feature, repeat it and add a little, ‘A hairy green monster with giant ears’.
If it stalls
- Swap scribbles and let each of you finish the other's.
- Scribble first and wait a moment. Often the monster appears on its own.
Short on time? One scribble, two eyes, one name.
Why it's good for them: Turning a mistake-proof scribble into a character builds creative confidence and storytelling.
Not this one? Try sponge painting, torn-paper mosaic, wax resist rainbow.
