Puddle jumping
Pull on wellies and see how big a splash you can make.
You'll need
- Wellies
- Waterproofs
- A towel for later
How to play
- Walk to the nearest puddles.
- Try tiny steps, big stomps and jumps.
- Measure the splash: who got wetter, who made the biggest ripple?
- Float a leaf or twig boat.
Try saying this
“Which puddle shall we try first? You choose.”
Your part
Jump in a puddle next to them. Share the splash with a big reaction, and say what you see, ‘Wow, ripples going all the way out’.
If it stalls
- Splash a small one yourself and wait to see if they copy.
- If they are unsure, hold a hand and step in a shallow one together.
Short on time? Find one puddle and jump three times.
Why it's good for them: Rainy-day outdoor play lifts mood and shows children the weather is something to enjoy.
Not this one? Try star map at dusk, pavement chalk town, shadow tracing.
