Picture book detective
Look at a picture book slowly and spot tiny hidden details.
You'll need
- A picture book with busy illustrations
How to play
- Pick a page and look together for 20 seconds.
- Take turns spotting something small.
- Make up what the characters might say.
- Turn the page and guess what comes next.
Try saying this
“What can you see that I have not spotted yet?”
Your part
Look where they look and name what you see. Add one new idea to their comment, then pause for them to take it somewhere else.
If it stalls
- Point to a tiny detail and wonder what it is thinking.
- Put the story aside and just talk about one picture.
Short on time? One page, three things spotted.
Why it's good for them: Talking around the pictures gets children using words far beyond the ones on the page.
Not this one? Try when you were little, photo album tour, jigsaw together.
