Tissue suncatchers
Stick coloured tissue to a window and let the light do the rest.
You'll need
- Coloured tissue paper
- Clear sticky-back plastic or contact paper
- Card for a frame
- Scissors
How to play
- Cut a frame from card and stick it to the sticky side of the plastic.
- Tear or cut tissue into pieces.
- Press them onto the sticky surface, overlapping a few.
- Hang it in a sunny window and watch the colours glow.
Try saying this
“What do you think will happen when the sun shines through?”
Your part
Hold the frame steady and get excited about where the light lands. Notice colour mixes out loud, ‘Yellow and blue made green’.
If it stalls
- Hold the sheet up to the window as soon as there are three pieces on, so they see the glow early.
- Offer shapes to cut with child scissors, or let them tear freely.
Short on time? Stick five scraps on and hold it up to the light.
Why it's good for them: Seeing colours overlap makes mixing and light feel like magic, which keeps children curious.
Not this one? Try torn-paper mosaic, salt dough animals, bubble wrap prints.
