Rain stick
Make a rain stick from a tube, foil and rice.
You'll need
- A cardboard tube
- Tin foil
- Dry rice or lentils
- Tape and paper to decorate
How to play
- Seal one end of the tube with tape and paper.
- Twist foil into a spiral and drop it inside.
- Pour in a handful of rice and seal the other end.
- Tip it slowly and listen to the rain.
Try saying this
“What do you think it will sound like?”
Your part
Shake yours gently and describe the sound, ‘It sounds like soft rain’. Let them decide the next steps.
If it stalls
- Seal one end and let them pour the rice.
- Use a sealed bottle if tubes are hard to find.
Short on time? Shake a jar of rice and close your eyes.
Why it's good for them: Making and playing an instrument links listening to doing.
