Shadow tracing
Draw round shadows with chalk, then come back later and see them move.
You'll need
- Chalk
- A sunny spot
- Toys or each other
How to play
- Stand a toy on the ground and trace its shadow.
- Try your own shadow. Strike a pose and trace it.
- Come back an hour later and see where the shadow went.
- Trace again in a different colour.
Try saying this
“Where do you think the shadow will be later?”
Your part
Pose with them and describe what you notice, ‘My shadow is much longer than yours’. Wonder aloud why, and let them guess.
If it stalls
- Make a funny pose together and trace each other's.
- Cloud cover? Use a torch on a wall or paper inside.
Short on time? Trace one shadow, then check it again at lunch.
Why it's good for them: Tracing shadows at different times shows how light and time work, in a way a child can see.
Not this one? Try star map at dusk, cloud spotting, colour scavenger walk.
